Mat, Mat, Mat, what will we do with this fella??? I started or finished i can't remember, my last post/review of Mat the same way im gonna start this one. Mat IS the best DJ I know and the most technically sound i've ever seen. Ever. Does that make Mat the best DJ in the world?? In my eyes perhaps...i've seen a lot of DJ's in my time (im hella old...29...sheeeesh) and its not just the technical aspect of what Mat does which brings me to my conclusion, its more than that. I'll explain. I caught up with Mat during Z Trip's performance and got to chat a bit with him. Here is a fact: The Alien has never in his time as a DJ asked to play a gig or show or event or whatever. Every show he has ever played has been the result of word of mouth. Next tid bit of info that drew my conclusion: If you know Mat you'll know he is the most humble human. Mat has never been one to self promote. He may have a sticker or whatever but he's never tried to promo the shit outa himself to create buzz so to speak. He's always just let his skill, fingers and music selection do the talking. And thats the point. He's never HAD to promote. Promoting yourself and trying to get people to notice and remember you is important but the problem is it can become more important than your craft. What stands out in the example that is Mat is he is blowing up without that non-sense. His 8 month residency in vegas, his constant globe trotting to gigs and festivals, his contribution and collaborations on albums...all word of mouth. Yeah obviously at this point its self sufficient but knowing the roots and how it got to this point in my eyes makes him the most under rated DJ and one that should be the most respected and yeah fuk it, the best there is.
Mat opened for Z Trip and Bassnectar last weekend and unfortunatly I was only able to catch the last 15 mins. As expected he had the floor filled and Popinov. Bottom heavy DnB and trademark precision cutting and scratching overtop. Love the hip hop samples overtop of 175 BPM's. Made for each other them genres. Anyway the fashionably late arrival makes for a pretty short reveiw but as per usual, he killed it.
Heres a history lesson....
Whistler/Vancouver local Dj Mat The Alien has funked the lenolium off dance floors both here in our city and abroad for years. Mat grew up not too far from Manchester (U.K.) and moved to Canada in the mid 90’s to follow his snowboarding addiction which he stumbled upon during a trip to Austria. He has been DJ’ing since 88 and was inspired to play the drums by local bands such as (The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays) after being introduced to the DJ culture of the acid house warehouse party’s he was hooked on blending beat’s on the turn tables.
Described by Knowledge Magazine as, “Awe inspiring & Some next level shit.” Mats music selection appeals to a wide variety of crowds, spanning many genres from Hip-Hop,funk,dance-hall,break-beats,drum & bass, rock, and more. He learned this from DJ’ing in Whistler to varied crowds of people visiting from all over the world. Mat has toured across the globe at events of up to 10,000 people, pioneering regular club nights in Whistler, Vancouver and held down a bi-weekly night in Las Vegas at Eye Candy (Mandalay-Bay) for 8 month’s. His most recent accolade is the 7 tracks he scratched on for the new Fort Knox Five album "Radio Free DC" available on iTunes. Pure funk and definaetly worth the pick up. On another note Mat has also changed the way people play records with “Mats Mats” slipmat’s for 45’s allowing Dj’s to scratch and cue 45 rpm records the same as they would a 12-inch. At shows Mat is know for pristine - quick mixing of many genres (usually driven by heavy bass-lines) and scratching techniques that really does sound like it came from another world. Did Mat really get abducted by aliens ???? We’ll never know but one thing is certain- Mat the Alien is capable of some out of this world shit....

True. All true. Mat Killed it. Nice post DSTRRR.
Hells yeah, Mat just came and ripped shit up in Saskatoon at the beginning of the month with Jon from FK5, and so true about him being one of the most down to earth humans on the planet, he's been here 4 or 5 times now, and every time he's been back he's not only remembered first meeting me, but even remembered my name, that's solid. Sick write up!
